List of EV Price Drops Since 2022

EV price drops seem to come hard and fast these days so we’re compiling a list of all the brands that have, shall we say, become less greedy.

To start, we just want to say, how do these companies drop prices so drastically? Were they just blatantly overcharging from the start, or was it a clerical error?

If it’s due to efficiency in the process of making cars, then haven’t all cars dropped in price? How are consumers supposed to feel when they pay full price one day for something, and the next, it’s discounted for almost no reason?

Well, here’s a list of all EV price drops that we can see in Malaysia.

  1. BYD Atto 3 Ultra

Launch price 2023: RM167,800
Discounted price 2025: RM123,800

That’s a discount of RM44,000 in only 2 years. If your car is in good condition and the rates of depreciation are that of petrol cars, you should be able to sell your car and buy a new one today. So we checked it out and, hysterically, you can’t, because a used Atto 3 Extended Range is selling below RM100,000 now.

2. Chery Omoda E5

Launch price 2024: RM146,800
Discounted price 2025: RM119,800

That’s a discount of RM27,000. That’s a lot of money that could have gone into a home loan, or down payment for another car that won’t be discounted one year after its release.

3. Tesla Models 2024

Tesla Model 3:

Rear-Wheel Drive – RM181,000 (launch RM189,000)
Long Range AWD – RM210,000 (launch RM218,000)
Performance – RM242,000

Tesla Model Y:

Rear-Wheel Drive – RM191,000 (launch RM199,000)
Long Range AWD – RM238,000 (launch RM246,000)
Performance – RM280,000 (launch RM288,000)

The Model Y was further discounted to make way for its facelifted model in 2025 to RM173,800. You know, just like iPhones, when older models come in. That’s 2 steps down for the Model Y, to make it a total of RM25,200.

Save for the BYD, it seems like companies are charging at least RM20,000 above what they can sell your car for. Capitalism.

4. Smart Hashtag models

Yep, even in the premium segments, EV price drops are inevitable.

smart #1 Pro single-motor – RM169,000 (launch RM189,000)
smart #1 Premium single-motor – RM209,000 (launch RM219,000)

5. Ora Good Cat

Launch price 400 Pro 2022 – RM139,800
Discounted price 2024 – RM113,800

That’s a discount of RM26,000 in two years.

What do you feel about this? Should EV companies be allowed to drop prices willy-nilly?

Are consumers who bought expensive EVs as early adopters supposed to just shut up and take it, since they’re part of the experimental group?
