BYD and Audi EV Reportedly Stall In The Middle Of a Highway In Malaysia

BYD and Audi

In 2 separate incidents, two EVS, a BYD and an Audi EV, reportedly broke down in the middle of the highway in Malaysia.

Nur Afifah on Facebook reported about their BYD Atto 3 that performed an emergency brake in the middle of the highway while they were driving from Melaka to Penang.

Another user HL Tan shared about his Audi e-tron GT that stopped functioning while in a jam.

We’ll admit that with every car, there are going to be lemons, but we like since EVs are supposed to be the future, we need to double down on reporting cars that have shown to have issues.

In the case of the BYD, the car stalled because its 12V battery had low voltage and needed to be replaced.

There was no indication that the battery was low or warning that the car would stall mid-drive. The owner was doubly upset because they had driven the car for only 10 months.

The worst part about this case is that, the warranty had lapsed, since the owner had driven more than 20,000km and the warranty only covered 1 year or 20,000km driven whichever comes first.

Replacement cost for the battery was RM418. The cause for the battery failure is still unknown as 12V batteries are rated to function for at least 3 to 5 years.

In the case of the Audi, it was imported from Japan and the owner shared that it had broken down 3 times in around 13,000km of usage.

In this case, the electronics displayed multiple errors constantly including “Manoeuvre assist malfunction, Driver assistance limited, and brakes malfunction.”

The local variant costs over RM400,000 and it’s not a good look when a luxury EV from Germany similarly ships a lemon.

As of the date of publishing, the Audi owner’s troubles have not been resolved.

We’re here counting down the days till we get the lemon law. As the nation with the second highest car ownership rates in Asia, we deserve better.
