Best Racing Games To Download On Your Phone For FREE And Kill Time

The sound of the engine revving, the powerful steering wheel in your hands, gliding into a high-speed corner…ah, all the experiences that you CANNOT have while under quarantine. But what you cannot have in real-life, thankfully there is probably an app or two to make up for it. Here are some of the best racing games that you can download for free on your phone. They may have in-app purchases and you’d probably have to spend money to see real progress, but at least you can try before you buy:

It takes a while to get used to the controls, but once you get a feel for it, it is simple to play and highly engaging with its cool retro graphics, voiceovers, soundtrack and humour thrown into the mix. Car selection is limited but good and takes a while to unlock, so it will keep you hooked if you like to take your time.

Asphalt 9: Legends

Pick your dream car from a portfolio of 50 real hypercars from the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and W Motors, and then race them in some of the most fantastic locations around the world against equally spectacular machines. 5-star for graphics and gameplay. Free to download but definitely requires in-app purchases of cars to progress, though.

Hill Climb Racing 2

A good ol’ 2D-style game but don’t think that makes it less exciting. Test your skills on treacherous terrain that brings you past houses, trees, farms and grazing animals in the background. Great for casual players and takes up but a little space on your phone.

CSR Racing 2

The visuals are unbelievable in this one. Not only are there realistic-looking 3D renderings of cars like the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Koenigsegg One:1 on the outside, but you can also “enter” the car and see the detailed interior and original manufacturers’ trim options. You might be confined to your home at the moment but, through the game, you can connect with your friends or other players around the world in real-time drag races.

Mario Kart: Tour

Who doesn’t love them some Mario? Our favourite plumber and his friends go on a global race tour in real cities around the world, collecting items and making use of the Frenzy mode to help win the race. Mario Kart: Tour is another engaging casual game to fill your time even if you are not “a car person”. However, we found that the multiplayer mode is incredibly problematic (laggy even with high internet speed; hope they fix that soon), but the regular tour is fun-filled enough.

Nitro Nation Drag & Drift

Another drag racing game featuring stunning graphics, real models and actual car sounds, plus a slew of customisation options. The best part is that each car handles differently, requiring you to modify the way you “drive” and making it more true to life. Also, since there is no energy limit, you can keep racing and get quite far without paying.
