Tesla Autopilot Thinks A Horse-Drawn Carriage is…a Truck

There has been plenty of incidences whereby Tesla’s Autopilot system wrongly identifies objects within its “sight”, such as that time when the Tesla thought the moon was a yellow traffic light. Another video has emerged on social media showing the Tesla self-driving system driving behind a horse-drawn carriage and began fritzing.

Uploaded by Youtuber under the ID RealRusty, the Swiss recorded his point of view as he approached the carriage in his Tesla on a highway outside Zurich. The system, as shown on the on-car screen, cycled through different modes of transport as it attempted to identify the object ahead: from a motorcycle, to a truck that appears to be spinning (scary), to a car, to a truck heading towards the Tesla, to a human and a car, and back to a truck.

The programmers over at Tesla probably never expected a car to cross paths with a horse-and-carriage on public roads (because it’s 2020) but they are still used in various parts of the world, like among the Amish community or as a tourist attraction in cities such as New York . Of course there is still a lot of work that needs to go into any autonomous vehicle system before they can take to the road with no surprises.

It was revealed recently that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in California, US of A took issue with Tesla’s claims that their “(Autopilot) system is designed to be able to conduct short and long distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat” as it implied that the car could operate autonomously, because for now, it shouldn’t.

This writer is inclined to agree. There are bound to be “strange new sights” in different countries, so what happens when someone drives a Tesla in a foreign land? What if a Tesla drove past Batu Caves? Would it think that there was a rainbow in the distance and a big pot of gold at the end?
