Volkswagen Golf is Best-Selling Car in Europe for First Half 2018

It comes as no surprise that the Volkswagen Golf is one of the best-selling cars in Europe and even the world. In the seventies, VW wanted something fresh and a replacement for the beloved Beetle, and in 1974, the Golf was born.

Seven generations later, it has given scores of people a lot of joy. It not only replaced the ‘People’s Car’ but sold in the container loads. In 2002, it became the best-selling Volkswagen of all time and in mid-June 2013, by its sixth generation, 30,000,000 units had been sold.

Volkswagen had created a car which was reliable, safe and had enough performance options to satisfy even the pickiest of the bunch. That enthusiasm hasn’t faded away, in spite of its parent company’s ongoing Dieselgate problems and an increasing number of consumers opting for SUVs.

In the first half of this year, the Golf sold a staggering 257,550 units in Europe alone! That’s 1,411 units each day for six months!

See how the Golf has evolved since 1974 into its present design:

Mark 1 – 1974 to 1983

Mark 2 – 1983 to 1991

Mark 3  – 1991 to 1997

Mark 4 – 1997 to 2003

Mark 5 – 2003 to 2008

Mark 6 – 2008 to 2012

Mark 7 – 2012 to Present
