So, You’re Going To Have Problems with your CVT. The Question is Which Additive Will Solve Them?

Okay, let’s get straight into it. Is there any point adding an additive to your car? Just get a few petrol heads together and the age-old argument is almost guaranteed to start, except when it comes to Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) and then something weird happens—the discussion swiftly pivots to which additive is the best.

The CVT is not a new invention. Leonardo Da Vinci was the first to draw one and they were first used in steam locomotives. Like all transmissions, they are filled with fluid. Transmission fluid helps the hydraulic action required to shift gears and also reduces friction and wear in the bearings and gears, and manages heat using some form of extreme pressure agent. But all fluids wear out over time—the question is when.

As the fluid wears out, you will notice increased noise, vibration, shuddering and maybe even a nasty smell. The “old” fluid’s anti-friction properties has reduced and long-term damage is probably being done, especially to the seals, which will harden as the CVT heats up.

In the past few years, a number of products designed to address the problems of worn-out CVT fluid have been introduced into the market. It is important to remember that not all additives are created equal, so look for evidence that the product has been tested and if so, where and by whom.

The highest standards for CVT Fluid Testing are currently by the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization, which is more commonly referred to as JASO. They have designed a series of tests known as the JASO M349 Protocol that test the durability of CVT Fluids and their effectiveness in managing heat and wear. This is the test that you should look for before you purchase a CVT-related additive.

One of the additives that have undergone this stringent testing and was proven to more than double the life of ANY CVT fluid is the X-1R CVT Treatment. Scientifically formulated in the X-1R Daytona Laboratories, the X-1R CVT Treatment was able to revitalise the transmission fluid by restoring its components, leading to reduced noise, increased anti-shudder protection and smoother operations. This miraculous additive was formulated with the company’s proprietary Liquid Waxy Esters, which are proven to give added anti-friction protection, leading to lower operating temperature whilst increasing stability of the transmission fluid even in high temperatures.
