Porsche Is Moving Back to Petrol Engines

An ICE-powered Macan? Yes, please!

About blooming time is all I can say, not that Porsche do not make a really good EV, it is just that I want the choice and I do not want the depreciation that comes with owning the likes of a Taycan.

A lot of automakers have come to the same decision of late after evaluating their plans for an all-EV future. It turns out that the public are in no way as enthusiastic for them as we were led to believe.

Porsche recently announced the loss of 1900 jobs. Demand for their vehicles, particularly the EVs, has not matched expectations. Worse, sales have fallen at least 28% in their key market of China.

This means that in addition to continuing to develop EV power trains, they have now committed a reported USD831 million to developing combustion hybrid power trains, and that is just for 2025.

This number includes “battery” activities, which may well relate to the rumoured problems they are having with getting the all-EV 718 (Boxter and Cayman) models.  But it is not as easy as flipping a switch, and apparently, they cannot simply use the ones they deleted to go electric.

The Company has already made a slew of announcements around the V8 Cayenne and Panamera, both of which are slated for production after the European ban on ICE cars in 2030.

The EV Cayenne has already been delayed by a year and is now expected in 2026 and there are rumours that the ‘junior’ Porsche’s aka Boxter and Cayman will soon sport a new ICE engine along with the EV option. Only time will tell which one the customers prefer.

What about the Macan? This was the best-selling model in the Porsche range and for good reason, they are great and I should know I have owned two. I have been looking at replacing my wife’s 2020 with a new one, but, even though the new EV model is a great looking car and reasonably priced in Malaysia, I just cannot see my self riding in a home appliance.

The rumour is that there will be an ICE powered version coming sooner than later and at that time I may well indulge in a little shopping.
