Michael Bay Is The Director Who Damaged and Destroyed the Most Cars in Movies
Last year, in an interview with Screen Rant, director Michael Bay who directed all the Transformers movies and then some said that he “definitely probably destroyed more vehicles than any other director in history.” At that time, there was no data to back up his claim…but now there is.
Scrapcarcomparison.co.uk did the research to find out which A-list directors have destroyed the most cars in their films. Well, we use the word ‘research’ loosely because we imagine it was a bunch of them eating popcorn, watching movies and counting cars.
According to the article published on their website, the methodology did involve popcorn and for each film, they counted the number of cars that were damaged, from a broken wing mirror to a bullet in the body, or totally destroyed and had to be written off.
Bay did indeed top the list, having damaged or written off 354 cars in total in the fifteen films he had directed: from his directorial debut in the 1995 film Bad Boys in which a vintage Shelby Cobra 427 was crashed into a concrete wall to 155 cars—almost half of his total count—from the five Transformer films.
Second place goes to Justin Lin, whom you might have assumed would have taken the crown in this “competition” considering his work on the Fast and Furious films. But Lin only wrecked 135 cars in the ten Furious films that he helmed, a little over one-third of Bay’s damage count.
The third place on the podium goes to John Landis, who earned this position largely thanks to the largest car pile-up in movie history according to the Guinness World Record, which involved 50 cars in the 1980 Blues Brothers movie.
Here is the top ten list of Directors who are car wreckers:
