Will Ferrari adopt an E-Fuel Platform for the LaFerrari?

Launched about a decade ago the LaFerrari is about to be replaced, and the good news is that it will have a petrol burning engine included.

Following on from Porsches E-Fuel intentions, Benedetto Vigna, the Ferrari head-honcho, believes that environmentally friendly e-fuels and even hydrogen powertrains may well be the future of Ferrari and he is willing to devote some of his motorsport’s effort to prove such technologies.

The belief over in Maranello is that e-fuels will become the reality and future of cars, particularly the super-car version.

Vigna has stated that they are already working with partners to develop e-fuelled engines for carbon neutral cars for the 2026 Formula-1 series, a development that will become a part of the new technical rules for that season apparently. And as we have seen before so many racing developments have a habit of finding themselves out on the road a little bit later.

Vigna said “We believe there is still a valid way forward for ICE cars and this is going to be supported by the development of carbon-neutral fuel.”

Ferrari are of course expected to unveil the long overdue successor to the LaFerrari hyper car which has been rumoured to be built on similar hardware as the 296 and SF90 supercars both of which are of course hybrids.  However, expect the power to be ramped up somewhat.

As of now details about the new bestie from Ferrari are very much under wraps including the choice of engines. Will it be a V8, V10 or V12? We simply do not know but Vigna’s comments does suggest that it will be capable of running on the new e-fuels.

We do know the codename though and that is F250 and spy pictures of it have already surfaced on the web during advanced road testing. The launch date is equally shrouded in mystery but most think we can expect it to be launched in the middle of next year.

Ferrari also have an interest in Hydrogen fuel cells but does not believe that they will be ready to go with that fuel source until 2030.

Of course the e-fuel is good news for all ’petrol-heads’ and would mean that Ferrari will be able to continue to produce ICE powered vehicles after the EU ban the sale of new ones powered by fossil fuel sometime in 2035.

Ferrari are looking to the future and that future still includes ICE powered vehicles.
