M’sian Influencer Complains About Waiting 3 Hours To Charge EV on East Coast Expressway

Influencer Iman Kamil posted recently on Instagram about his journey back home in an EV the MG4 XPower on the East Coast Expressway and it has gone viral with netizens debating the veracity of his complaints as well as supporting him.

In the video he stopped at a charger at the Gambang R&R stop at around 2:05pm, with a battery of 19%.

He then waited for 2 cars, both Teslas to finish charging which took about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

He charged his car for 1 hour and 20 minutes which took it up to 92% battery. The whole ordeal clocks in about 3 hours.

The kicker to this story is that he only had 229 km of range to get to his home 227 km away, so he would need to stop again to charge. Talk about range anxiety turning into range rage.

This is the perfect story to tell EV lovers and many have come to the defence of the car and have pointed out the errors of Iman.

Instead of pointing out the obvious and inherent flaws in EV charging and the lack of infrastructure, some netizens are victim blaming Iman and accusing him of things like failing to plan and being heavy-footed while driving the EV which may have caused the short range estimates.

Depending on where the story is shared, there are EV defenders and haters bringing their arguments to bare. ICE vehicle lovers are quick to point out a fill up will only take 5 minutes while EV apologists have pointed out everything from charging etiquette to sharing the actual range of the car.

Our take? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Stop taking EVs places where they don’t belong.
