Not only do we have glow-in-the-dark roads, we’re the first country in Southeast Asia to try out glow-in-the-dark roads.
The first road was launched in Hulu Langat on Jalan Sungai Lalang (B19). The road was first revealed on 28 October in 2023. Now, there are actually a few stretches of roads that have these glow-the-dark lines.
Why glow-in-the-dark roads I hear you say?
Well, for one, they’re cheap to do, and two they can be placed on roads where there are no street lights.
These strips can glow for at least 10 hours at night and according to sources can be seen slightly in the rain too.
The next road to receive the glow up was a stretch in Batu Pahat, Johor. Completed in May 2024, the state government said that it would evaluate more places for these strips.
They come in handy in areas where erecting an electrical pole is unfeasible and where there are no electrical wiring in the first place.
The Selangor government had previously announced plans to expand the initiative to 15 different locations within all nine districts of Selangor.
While that was reported in February of 2024, to date, there have been no new sites for these shiny roads. The Selangor government had also previously mentioned that these glowing pavements would be ideal for bikers, but we didn’t find many reports of happy cyclists.
Perhaps cost was a factor as the photoluminescent paint cost RM749 per sqm, compared to RM40 per sqm for conventional road marking paint.
