Flying Cars For Sale. Can We Use It In Manila?

Are flying cars for real? Of course they are! Can we buy them, of course you can! Can we use them to bypass the monstrous traffic in Manila? Automologist HAROLD doesn’t think so, for now.

If you have nothing to do with your money, here is one of the most expensive flying car you can buy, the AEROMOBIL 3.0.

AEROMOBIL 3.0 for USD 1.6 Million.

This is not a mere flying car. It is collapsible, meaning that it is not only fit for airstrips (grassy or paved) but road-worthy, so you can drive it on regular gasoline and fit it into any standard parking space. How amazing is that!

The 3.0 version takes off at 90 mph with a flying range of 430 miles—from Vigan, Ilocos Sur to Legaspi, Albay—at a fuel consumption rate of 15 liters/hour in flight mode. Its sleek design and easy operability have made it one of the most eagerly sought-after flying cars. The company has yet to announce its official target commercial launch.

For something cheaper and about the price of a Rolls Royce in Manila, you can have the PAL-V LIBERTY flying car. Oh no, PAL does not stand for Philippine Airlines.

PAL-V LIBERTY for USD 400,000.

This Dutch-engineered and Italian-designed flying car is one of the best products out of Europe. Designed to seat 2 people and with a maximum take-off weight of 910 kg, this can fly at 160 km/h. This 100-horsepower flying supercar can cover a maximum range of 500 kilometers—Clark, Pampanga to Naga, CamSur—with the fuel lasting 4.3 hours at maximum capacity. Being a gyroplane, the blades of the car are powered by the wind, meaning that they will rotate as long as there is wind. While the idea first started in 1999, PAL-V Liberty had its public launch only in 2017. The keys to the first customers was handed over in 2020.

Now, this is getting more affordable. For just the price of Mercedes Benz G Class in Manila, you can have an EHANG 184.

EHANG 184 for USD 300,000.

In the Ehang 184, you can cruise above sea level for the duration of 25 minutes at a maximum flight speed of 100 km/h with this cool flying car. Perfect to avoid Manila traffic, the maximum altitude you can reach on the Ehang 184 is 500 metres with the battery charging time of 1 hour. A great feature of this flying car is the downward facing camera, making it very suitable for scientific and investigative purposes. It is also aided by flashlights and signal lights. Another feature is space for storage in this one seater with a rated payload of 100 kgs.

This last one on my feature list should excite everyone because for the price of a Toyota Land Cruiser in Manila, you can own a SAMSON SWITCHBLADE. Since the Toyota LC has a long queue list and will only be available next year, you might want to buy this flying car instead.

SAMSON SWITCHBLADE for USD 120,000

The Samson Switchblade has a design that makes it very efficient and practical for everyday use. It can fly at speeds up to 200 mph and is capable of flying up to a height of 13,000 feet, and it becomes flight ready in just under 3 minutes. Seats two and it can accommodate 100 pounds of luggage, Samson prides itself on a wide cabin and the power-to-weight ratio of a 2017 Corvette. It also has its own heating and air conditioning to make it pleasant in all weather conditions. Want to drive it on the road? It has a 5-speed transmission, and its wings and tails are foldable and retractable are protected while you are driving it on the road. You can get a customized switchboard if you so desire.

Makers of flying cars contend that while they seem to be still a bit costly and affordable only for the rich, future economies of scale will bring the prices down to around the price of a Honda Jazz. But, the greatest advantage of this mode of transport is there is no more need to build expensive roads and bridges—there is an airspace that is under-utilized. However, the more urgent question for now is: Will these flying cars be given permit to fly in Manila?

By the way, most of these flying cars would need some performance products for their lubrication, fuel and transmission and X-1R products can address that need.
