The seek him here, they seek him there but Italian cops have thus far failed to corner Fleximan, the vigilante hell bent on dismantling the Italian network of speed cameras.
A special task force has been assembled in Italy after a vigilante dubbed Fleximan destroyed 15 speed cameras. The unknown freedom fighter, or more accurately vandal, has so far destroyed fifteen cameras in the North East of the country in the past month.
Social media spread news of his antics which is where he got his nick-name Fleximan. Apparently, the angle grinder tool that he uses to cut the cameras down with is called a Flessibile so you can see it was just a short hop, skip, and jump to call him Fleximan.
His actions are unsurprisingly popular with the massive increase in speed cameras in Italy which has a serious reputation for road anarchy and speeding. The authorities of course, claim that they are just trying to reduce the road death carnage on the nations’ roads which is the highest in Europe according to the European Road Safety Council.
The unknown social justice warrior is getting bolder, at a recent ‘attack’ he even went as far as leaving a note that simply read “Fleximan is coming”. The chorus of support from netizens is growing as well with many describing him as a modern-day Robin Hood.
Even a street artist called Padua has joined in. His most recent work featured Uma Turman holding a Katana (samurai’s sword) in one hand, like she did on the film Kill Bill, and a chopped-off speed camera in the other.
Italy is now home to more speed cameras, or Autovelox as they are locally known, than any other European country at over 11,000 in total. In Italy, they are as equally loathed as in other nations. In comparison, the UK has a mere 7,700 and Germany a lowly 4,700.
But then when you consider that Italian road deaths are slightly more than double the UK, this may go to explain the nations’ race to install so many.
It is thought that there may be more than one Fleximan which is hampering the Police effort to catch him/them.
