Chery Omoda 5 Back Axle Breaks Mid-Drive, What Will Chery Say This Time?
The hits keep coming for Chery as reports of a Chery Omoda 5 back axle breaking loose on its own without any impact has surfaced online.
We previously reported about the same model from Chery that had a brake issue that has since been brushed off by both Chery Malaysia and PUSPAKOM, the agency responsible for testing car safety in Malaysia.
This time, Facebook user Stephanie reported that her Chery Omoda 5’s back axle “snapped clean off while driving. No bumps, no accidents, no potholes, just sudden failure in the middle of the road.”
“Also, why does it look like there are only 2 weld points instead of all the way round, allowing what seems to be like rust to eat away at the joint and cause it to spontaneously fall off?”
The car has been towed to the Balakong service centre and the Facebook user is awaiting the verdict from Chery.
Though a courtesy car was offered, the user declined it. To further prove that there was no foul play on her part, Stephanie also included video evidence from her dashcam that she was driving on a straight road without any bumps.
Once again, Chery were quick to respond to the post and released a statement almost immediately:

Our sincere thanks to our customers and followers for your patience. We are committed to transparency and assure you of our unwavering dedication to quality and satisfaction.
We’re not sure if calling concerned customers to “book an appointment for a thorough inspection” is the best call here.
What are we saying? That your vehicle is most likely broken and you can come down to make sure it’s not? Why not say that it’s an isolated incident outright?
Of course, you can’t say that if you aren’t confident in yourselves that the quality of your vehicle is up to snuff.
In 2023, the company exported 937,148 vehicles, a year-on-year growth of 101.1% and this case is just 1 of 2 highly publicised cases in Malaysia. So, perhaps it’s just a matter of luck.
Nevertheless the Chery Omoda 5 is still a popular car for many and it’s unsure at this time if this case will slow sales down for it in Malaysia.
