Major Car Manufacturers Push Back on Californian 2035 EV Plan

Californian 2035 EV plan

A collection of Automakers, known as the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI), are pushing back on the Californian 2035 EV plan to end the sale of internal combustion engine vehicle (ICE) by 2035.

The legislation would mean that by 2026, 35% of all cars sold by a manufacturer must be EVs; this number rises to 80% by 2030. At least eleven other US states have adopted the legislation.

Major car manufacturers are warning that the ban would see most of them scaling back on their sales of ICE vehicles to comply with the legislation and thus avoid fines. This would create a shortage of cars in the state, according to them.

The AAI represents General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and a number of other large manufacturers said that car companies would be forced to substantially reduce the number of overall vehicles for sale to inflate their proportion of EV sales.

The Houe of Representatives are scheduled to vote sometime this week on legislation to repeal a Biden era waiver that gave the Environmental Protection Agency (aka EPA) that enabled California to be able to mandate a target of 80% for EV’s by 2035.

The House is also expected to block new California Air Resources Board (CARB) new emissions controls that are due to be implemented for Heavy Vehicles and off-road vehicles.

A while ago a number of European nations announced that they were to push back on the banning of ICE vehicles.  We are still awaiting the outcome of the vote on that one.

I am deeply cynical about the Californian 2035 EV plan and the need to convert the worlds mobility over to electric vehicles to stop global warming, as I have written in the past

Humans only contribute about 3% of carbon dioxide and of that number very little actually comes from cars. Ask any geologist (and I am one) and they will tell you that since the world began we have gone through numerous cycles of global warming and freezing.

There is no doubt in my mind that what we are going through has very little to do with humans and everything to do with forces beyond our ability to control.
