Awesome Hoverbike Ready for Market

Automologist MAC wants one.

So, it has been a little while since our fixation with personal flying vehicles has surfaced, but we are back and this time with a piece of true awesomeness coming out of Scandinavia.

The Swedish maker of the electrical vertical take-off and landing vehicle, which goes by the name of Jetson, has announced that they will be bringing their USD92,000 personal flying vehicle to market, and I for one love it almost as much as I love the name of the company. The Jetsons was of course the 1960’s cartoon show set in the future where the family got around in a flying car. It was probably the awesomeness of this that has fixated me on owning a personal flying car at some point in my life. Let’s face it, at USD92,000, I may even be able to club together, sell one or two of my kidneys and actually afford it.

The company has released a really snazzy promotional video to accompany the announcement. The video set in what looks like a dried-up lake bed shows the sleek but minimalistic design going through its paces, with flight information displayed on a smartphone. The craft looks very much like the pilot has strapped himself into a motorbike and taken off.

There is a reason why the craft, which is called the Jetson-One, is ultra-small; in the US of A, the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) definition of an ultra-light craft is one that weighs less than 254 pounds (which is of course 115 kilos to the rest of us) and has a maximum speed of less than 100kph. Under these limits, there is no need for a pilot’s license.

Jetson claims that they have taken preorders for 118 bikes and will be shipping the first one sometime later this year, but only to people who have “previous experience”, according to the company, and even then, all new owners will have to pass a two-day boot camp to be held in Tuscany, Italy. Going to start saving my pennies now…
