The All-New Myvi Launched and it is Better Than Ever
Automologist ATHERTON brings us the deets on the all-new Myvi.
Perodua’s All-New Myvi is finally launched after we had a peek of it at the Malaysian Autoshow last weekend. The nation’s best-selling model for the previous nine years, before the Axia, has a 5-star safety rating by ASEAN NCAP, and Perodua has already been besieged with 5,000 bookings. It lives up to what Myvi is an acronym for—Modern technology, Youthful design, Versatile space and Intelligent safety—and will be available in all showrooms nationwide with prices ranging from RM44,300 to RM55,300.

I sat in the Myvi yesterday and it looks really great. I felt that it looked like a VW Golf, which is a good thing—it gives a certain pizzaz to the Myvi. The feel of the leather steering and high quality texture of the dashboard were plus points. As the new Myvi sits lower than its predecessor, it gives you that racy feel and is much sleeker in appearance.

“This new model features technology which was before this only available in premium cars, this All-New Myvi also sets a benchmark for us in terms of quality, design and overall offerings for our future models,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.
The top of the line variant has Advanced Safety Assist (ASA), which has 4 main functions:
- Pre-Collision Warning alerts the driver that a collision is about to happen.
- Pre-Collision Braking assists drivers by applying the brakes, if they are still unaware of the impending collision.
- Front Departure Alert gives a warning to the driver that the vehicle in front has moved. Useful in heavy traffic (when one is fiddling with one’s smartphone).
- Pedal Misoperation Control. If the driver accidentally selects Drive instead of Reverse when there is an obstacle in front, such as a wall, this feature will assist in suppressing the engine if the accelerator pedal is pushed.
The All-New Myvi is the only car below RM100,000 to have Pre-Collision Braking, or as some may call it, autonomous emergency braking (AEB)

“These features are a first for this price segment. However safety is still in the hands of the driver and the system is only there to assist,” Datuk (Dr) Aminar said.
The ASA features are limited in their application as the forward-facing stereo camera will only operate under the right conditions. The ASA feature is only available in the Advance variant and has a built-in toll reader too; how ‘bout that, eh? Perodua states that the all-new Myvi achieves fuel economy figures of between 20.1 and 21.1 km/l. That is on average 32% more efficient than the previous model!

The Myvi is 205mm longer, 30mm lower and 70mm wider, with a 60mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor, hence more space inside. The boot is much bigger than the previous generations that I am accustomed to. Pleasantly surprised best describes how I felt when I saw the luggage space, which has increased by 69 litres compared to the outgoing Myvi, to 277 litres.

Perodua says that it used 2.5 times more high-tensile steel than before, with additional bracing and reinforcements in strategic areas. The increased body rigidity has translated to improved driving stability and crash performance. An acoustic windshield reduces NVH levels. Enhancements to the suspension include thicker front and rear stabiliser bars, a new lightweight front lower arm, stiffer rear beam structure with new curved design and a redesigned rear cross member for better rigidity.
As for airbags, 1.5 variants come with six airbags while four airbags are standard on 1.3 variants. Perodua offers six different complexions: Ivory White, Glittering Silver, Mystical Purple, Lava Red, Peppermint Green (new colour, 1.3 variants only) and Granite Grey (new colour, 1.5 variants only).

If you’re planning on getting the Myvi, get it. With a million Myvis having rolled off the assembly plant in just 12 years, and if Perodua continues in this fashion, the next million should be achieved in no time. With features that you will only find in premium cars, I can only say one thing:IT IS WORTH EVERY SINGLE RINGGIT!
