Testing out the Honda Civic (FC) 1.5 VTEC Turbo at MJN Motors, Malaysia

Automologist ATHERTON takes the latest Honda Civic FC for a test spin.

The Honda Civic needs no introduction. Firstly, Honda cars in Malaysia has a reputation so good that its resale value only drops slightly each year. It is no surprise that Honda Malaysia recorded the highest sales for a non-national car, with 109,511 vehicles sold last year. That’s an average of 300 units per day!

The Civic FC, as it is officially known, came out fourth highest among all Honda models sold, with a 14% share, topped by the City (27%), HR-V (17%) and BR-V (16%)

The tenth generation, launched two years ago, has pushed the envelope further away from the competition, with its breathtaking looks and not forgetting an engine to match. Its fastback shape had customers lining up to make their booking as soon as it was launched.

The one I test drove with the friendly sales consultant, Winson, of MJN Motors, was the highest-specced unit: the 1.5TC-P (‘TC’ for turbocharged and ‘P’ for premium) with LED headlights and a Modulo bodykit to boot. It really looked slick, so much so that a mate actually wants to trade in his ‘continental make’ for one.

The whole dashboard layout, with its full-colour LCD meter, and soft and supple leather seats are top-notch. This variant has 17-inch alloy wheels, paddle shifters, a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo and CVT powertrain.

I always like to test the seat at the back, in case I ever have to swap places with friends, and see how much space there is between my knees and the driver’s seat. Well, the space is more than adequate and really comfortable.

It is capable of 173PS @ 5,500 rpm and 220 Nm of torque from 1,700 to 5,500 rpm. The century sprint is done in 8.2 seconds. A full tank of petrol supposedly gives you over 600 kilometres.

Spacious, practical, user-friendly, great looks, brilliant engine and a brand that has stood the test of time, what more can you ask for?

MJN Motors’ new Honda 3S centre is in Cheras, specifically Taman Rasa Sayang. If you’re anywhere in the areas of Cheras, Kajang and Seri Kembangan, it’ll be the ideal place to get your Honda car or have it serviced.

This 11,000 sq.ft. building, which cost a whopping RM6 million, can accommodate up to 30 cars per day. It has a total of 12 bays, comprising seven service bays, three general repair bays and two tyre service bays.
