Proton’s First SUV is Here! Starting Just Shy of RM100,000
The highly anticipated SUV by Malaysia’s (first and former) national carmaker, Proton, was launched by the nation’s Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad a couple of days ago. The X70 is the first new product produced by Proton since Zhejiang Geely came on board in June 2017 and took a 49.9% stake in the company.
There are four variants on offer. All of them have a 1.8-litre turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder petrol mill mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, churning out 181 hp and 285 Nm, and sending power to the front wheels, except for the Executive AWD variant.
The four variants on offer are: Standard 2WD, Executive 2WD, Executive AWD and Premium 2WD.
The entry-level version has 17″ alloy wheels, 8″ touchscreen infotainment system with voice control (“Hi, Proton!”), dual-zone air-conditioning and air purifier system. The Executive 2WD is upgraded with, amongst others, 18″ allow wheels, 360-degree camera and 8 cameras. At the top, the Premium 2WD has a host of driver assistance and safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot info system, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control, as well as 9 speakers and a sunroof.
Prices begin at RM99,000 (on-the-road, w/o insurance) for the Standard 2WD variant and go up to RM123,800 for the top-of-the-line version. Our brothers and sisters across the South China Sea (that’s Sabah and Sarawak) will, for once, get to enjoy the same prices.
The X70 will temporarily be imported from China. Local assembly will commence in 2019 at Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant.
