The Range Rover Velar is set to be unleashed on Malaysian shores early Q2 2018, as announced by Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia.

The name ‘Velar’ had been used previously on a series of pre-production models in 1969...as a cover-up. Land Rover was working on a new project which would lead to the Range Rover, but wanted everything to be done surreptitiously; thus, the prototypes were fitted with a 'Velar' badge. The word itself originates from the Latin verb velare, which means 'to hide'.

The new Range Rover Velar occupies a slot between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, and is inundated with the latest gadgets, driving assistance technology and sumptuous interior comforts. The mid-sized SUV has an aluminium-intensive monocoque body; the chassis features air suspension, stability control, roll stability control, and hill descent control. Matrix-laser LED headlights that are close to daylight produces brilliant illumination and reduces eye fatigue.

Flush deployable door handles, and a low drag coefficient of 0.32 make it the most aerodynamically efficient Land Rover ever produced.

The Velar is built on the same platform as the Jaguar iQ and shares a number of components with the Jaguar F-Pace, XF, and XE models, notably its aluminium platform and 2,874mm (113.1-inch) wheelbase, which are all built in the plant in Solihull, U.K.

A minimalist approach has been taken for the cabin, which comes with the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, featuring two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens that form the centerpiece. Optional 12.3” high-definition Interactive Driver Display provides information, entertainment and active safety data, including navigation, phone, media and driving aids.

If you’re into light off-roading, the Velar can wade in depths of up to 650mm and has a towing power of 2,500kg. All-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics and optional active locking rear differential ensure maximum driver engagement.

A range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines are available in either 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 layout as below, but we have yet to receive word which engine and pricing will be offered in Malaysia.
